“You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Jesus, in Matthew 6:33)
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1st Corinthians 10:31)
I was looking at people’s cubicle decorations at work the other day. Later on, I was looking at people’s profiles on Facebook. I was thinking about my own life, and I was thinking about all the people I’ve known throughout my lifetime.
I was thinking about what people valued most in life, or at least what they seemed to value most in life, based on all indications.
Who are the people that you’ve personally known who are the most Christ-like?
Do you know anyone who values God above all else, in everything they do, whatever they do?
Where God is truly the dominant value and concern above everything else?
I don’t mean valuing God only as a slogan on a bumper sticker or on a t-shirt. Those could be just another way of giving God lip-service while our hearts are far from Him: “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.” (Matthew 15:8)
I have known only a few people like this in my entire 50 years of life. They weren’t perfect, but God was unquestionably the center of their life, the most valuable thing in their life: their Highest Value.
People worship all kinds of things. Here’s an incomplete list of some of the things that easily come to mind that people worship every day:
House or Houses
And I’ve known people whose dominant value seems to be Dolphins, Elephants, Gorillas, some other animal, or even inanimate objects.
Now here’s a second list of things people worship that may seem very pious, but in fact, to worship these things is to be just as much of an idol worshipper as people who worship the things above:
Your Church Denomination
Reading the Bible
Lord’s Supper (Communion)
The Felt Presence of God
Revelation of God
Even Your Relationship with God can be an idol, because it is not God Himself, it is what is between yourself and God.
People in Islam seem truly devoted to their God, Allah. Buddhist monks seem devoted to meditation and religious practice. But do
Christian believers truly worship God above all else?
What I’m saying here has nothing to do with whether you are saved or not. We are saved through faith in Jesus, without any regard for the condition of our hearts or the quality of our spiritual life.
What I am talking about here is what we actually worship.
God, the Creator, is the Trinity: God the Father, Redeemer Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments,” Jesus said in John 14:15.
Thou shalt have no other gods, said God.
Life is short. Don’t waste the life God gave you by worshiping anything other than God.
What would it look like if you put God first in everything? Glorifying God in whatever you did? If God were your highest value, your highest good, your highest happiness, what would your life look like? What would your life feel like? What would your life be like?
