According to the Bible, I do not think that this is life’s most persistent and urgent question.

I think that “are you believing the Word and Spirit of God”? and, “are you following the Word and Spirit of God” would be the first and second most important questions.

Doing good things for others is included in that, but without Jesus’ forgiveness and grace and indwelling, this just turns into feeling good about yourself because of all the wonderful things that you do for others. That is prideful and delusional false salvation by works: “I’m a good person.”

Jesus essentially says that that kind of believing and thinking leads to Hell.

People are sinners.

Focusing on the externally good things we do without recognizing our mountain of sins, is an eternally fatal delusion.

87% of Americans believe they are going to Heaven.

12% aren’t sure or don’t believe in afterlife existence.

And 1% of people believe they are going to Hell.

But Jesus, who is God Almighty Incarnate, essentially said that “many” are on the wide 16-lane highway that leads to destruction.

Every human being needs the mercy and grace of God provided in Jesus.

Jesus said that “few” find the way that leads to life: Himself.

He said: “I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.”

Notice that He said “comes,” not “goes,” indicating that He and the Father are One Being.

In John 6:47, Jesus said, “Most assuredly I say to you, He who believes in Me ~has~ everlasting life.”
