One of the paradoxical things in Christianity is when a person is living by his or her identity in Christ, when the person is living by the Spirit of God, they have more of the Spirit of Jesus coming through them, and they at the same time become much more aware of the sinfulness of their sinful nature, and the sin in their life.
The more they admit and confess their sins, the more they seem to be released from them, and the Spirit of Jesus comes through them.
I think one reason this happens is because they are not relying on themselves to produce goodness. They are recognizing that their sinful flesh is sinful, therefore they can rely on the Spirit of God and their identity in Christ, and not have the sense that their egos are being attacked if they talk about how sinful they are.
Believers have a new self in Christ.
“Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
